Hello! We are
Penpals in the Community
A ground-up initiative that aims to spark conversations between different communities one letter at a time.
We want to build friendships and encourage intergenerational bonding through the exchange of letters between seniors and youths.
Just like how we enjoy making new friends, we want to bring this experience to the seniors too – the old school way!
We believe this can keep them active and relieve a little of their loneliness.
We also recognize the value of letter-writing and are seeking opportunities to collaborate with diverse communities.
Why letter writing?

Why letter writing? 📮
Writing to a pen pal feels like a familiar yet exciting way of connecting and knowing someone new.
We hope this little activity can bring the seniors some joy when opening their letterbox, only to find a handwritten note for them.
we want them to know
There are people who wants to listen to their stories and that they are never alone.
how we started
When circuit breaker started in Singapore, there were many articles on how it has affected many people, particularly seniors living on their own. They experienced increased social isolation which had a great impact on their mental well-being.
In fact, this new norm was also taking a toll on millennials and adults, and it was hard for many to find a support system for themselves as they weren't used to this lifestyle.
I chanced upon an article on a nursing home that started a pen pal programme between their volunteers and residents. This sparked the idea of beginning Penpals in the community, creating something similar for a wider community.
Since most seniors are not adept at using tech gadgets or social messaging apps, I decided to try out something that they might be familiar with, letter writing.
Meet the team!
